Polonnaruwa rose to prominence as the capital under King Vijayabahu I, who unified the country by defeating the Chola invaders in the 11th century. However, it was during the reign of King Parakramabahu I (1153–1186 AD) that Polonnaruwa reached its zenith. The king’s extensive building projects, including the construction of palaces, parks, and reservoirs, transformed the city into a sophisticated urban center.
Polonnaruwa is an ancient city in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, recognized as one of the country’s most important historical and archaeological sites. It served as the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 AD. Today, Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its well-preserved ruins, stunning monuments, and rich history.
