Sigiriya has a rich history dating back to the 5th century AD. It was built by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 AD), who chose the site for his new capital. He constructed an elaborate palace atop a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 feet) high. The fortress complex included extensive gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. Following the king’s death, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
Sigiriya, often referred to as the “Lion Rock,” is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin situated in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its impressive history, stunning architecture, and exquisite frescoes.
